Vietnam's Port of Hai Phong Welcomes First Commercial Vessel at New Hai Phong Port TiL International Terminal (HTIT)

Hai Phong, Vietnam, April 16 – Vietnam’s Port of Hai Phong JSC received its first commercial vessel at the newly launched Hai Phong Port TiL International Terminal (HTIT), marking the start of operations at the country’s latest deep-water container port.

The MSC MAKALU III, operated by Swiss-based shipping giant MSC as part of its Orchid service, docked at Berths 3 and 4 of HTIT in the Lach Huyen port complex. The 210-metre-long ship discharged 484 imported containers, or 829 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the port operator said in a statement.

The new terminal, managed by Port of Hai Phong, is expected to enhance Vietnam’s container handling capacity and position Hai Phong as a key logistics hub in northern Vietnam. Officials said the successful arrival of a large vessel demonstrated the port’s readiness to handle international maritime cargo.

HTIT is part of Port of Hai Phong’s expansion strategy. The company currently operates multiple terminals, including Hoang Dieu, Chua Ve, Dinh Vu, and Tan Vu. Once fully operational, HTIT is projected to account for 40% of the region’s container throughput and 60% of non-container cargo in Hai Phong.

In March, Hai Phong Port reported consolidated cargo volumes of 3.29 million tonnes and revenues of 227.37 billion dong ($9.1 million), achieving 119% of its monthly target. The company said it aims to build on this momentum through expanded service offerings and closer coordination with shipping lines in the second quarter.

Port of Hai Phong also plans to ramp up marketing efforts and optimize operations amid ongoing changes to tax policies and shipping routes. The company said it would continue enhancing service quality and cost control to support import-export growth in the region.
